all for the best…

Chapter 36

Yash immediately rushed towards her with the papers and his rifle. He stood aiming the rifle at her head and released her hand ties. He nudged her shoulders with his knee. “Now…sign this quickly…”

Preeti’s hand was numb because she had been tied and her injury was bleeding. She winced.

“STAY AWAY FROM HER YOU… IF SHE IS HURT ANYMORE YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY HEAVILY YASH…” Gautam’s voice boomed.

Yash laughed aloud. “Welcome Gautam…welcome… I was waiting for you. One stupid move you make and the shot will blow her head into bits… So now come out right here with your weapon thrown away…. And my men here can see you when you come so DON’T YOU DARE DO ANYTHING YOU WILL REGRET…”

There was no noise at all. Preeti was almost losing consciousness… something was wrong with her… She had nothing in her stomach now but still felt like throwing up… The place wasn’t stinking like that day twelve years ago but still she felt as if she could sense the foul odour… she heaved again.

“Stop the drama Preeti and quickly sign in both the locations marked with a cross….” He dropped the papers and the pen on it. As Preeti lifted the pen she felt as if she was blackening out. As she looked up to control the bout of nausea passing through, she saw him. He was staring at her from the roof. He had silently removed a tile and they didn’t even know. He gestured her to be silent. She looked down and picked the papers as yet another bout of nausea passed and the papers started moving side by side… they started to dance… so did the walls around her. What was happening? She felt the nudge again from Yash and then she heard the loud sound as Gautam crashed in through the roof. The walls started shaking further and before she realised anything else she blacked out.

She heard the beep… was she back… twelve years back … in to the hospital? Her body was heavy. But this time she could open her eyes. Oh God she was in the hospital. Her hand was held tightly… “Preeti…sweetheart…are you alright dear?” Gautam’s voice vibrated through her senses.  She nodded as she felt nausea threaten her.

He released her hand and pressed a buzzer… must be for the doctor, she thought missing his contact. She was shuddering even to think about being in the hospital. He helped her sit up a little and held the water cup with the straw. She took it but immediately wanted to throw up. She then saw him. He was looking haggard. There was a bandage covering his head and wrist. Her eyes widened. But before she could speak the doctor entered the room with his entourage of staff.  The doctor examined her and checked the vitals.

“So Mr. Rathore… you can now stop threatening the staff here. Your wife is fine now. There is no injury of any sort. Blood reports will be up soon but I am sure they are fine. You can take her home tomorrow.  I shall check on her tomorrow morning again…” The doctor said.

Gautam thanked him and dropped him at the door. He waited outside till the nurses sponged and changed her. He then entered the room and latched the door. She had realised it was late in the evening.

Preeti looked at him staring at her. His eyes had welled up as he stood at the far end with hands on his hips. Her one hand was hooked to the IV. She raised the other and nodded him to come to her. He strode quickly covering the few steps and hugged her. He was shaking as he sobbed. He kissed her head numerous times. “Oh God Preeti you scared me there… I couldn’t lose you…”

She patted his back controlling tears of her own. “Hey darling…its ok… I knew you would come for me.”

Gautam wiped his tears and sat on the adjoining chair holding her hand.

“Gautam…what happened there?” she was desperate to know.

“Sweetheart… It took me all of ten minutes to get those three morons out of commission and bound. Tanveer has their custody as we speak. He… er…he is going to visit us tomorrow. But Preeti…those ten minutes…till I could feel your pulse…were the worst ten minutes of my life…” She tightened her grasp on his hand. He took it to his mouth and kissed her.

“Gautam… those papers… My hand is still…” she was feeling bad for him.

“Let it go Preeti…” He sighed. “…I don’t need that anymore….”

“What? why…your mother…”

“…Is long dead…” He bent his head. She caressed his head and he looked up tears shining in those stricken brown eyes. “…That Romila Devi…she had lied all these years… my mother had cancer… so she had to give me up. Mentor had known as well… She had died soon after. Preeti…” He had that faraway look. “…Romila Devi used that string to tighten the noose around my neck… for so many years… and I was a fool to…get involved. I should have known. She was a lying bitch…”

He was panting in anger. Her heart broke for him.

“Gautam… sweetheart…let it go… Living in the past is only going to bring more pain…”

He nodded. “I know Preeti…I have forgiven her. She doesn’t deserve even my hatred. She confessed to the police that Vikram had once told her about some hidden treasure in the fort and she wanted that. She was as twisted as her son… She has another huge blow. Narmada has disowned her. I think that’s punishment enough…”

“Gautam…it’s difficult to believe my docile brother Yash had so much of hatred imbibed for years…”

“Preeti, your family is in a state of shock as well. They were here last evening when we brought you… I refused to allow anyone near you, before I saw to it that you were OK. I have phoned them. They will meet you tomorrow morning before I take you home.”

Her eyes filled thinking about her family. He came close to her and sat next to her on the bed. She rested her head on his chest.

“Rewa was here as well with Suyash sometime back….”

Preeti was alert once again. “What…what did she say?”

“I asked her how she had met Vikram….for the first time… she spoke about some devi temple which you visited once in a while as a family… Apparently Vikram saw her during one such event and approached her… she fell for him instantly.”

Preeti remembered now, Rewa had been excited on their return during one of their mandatory family visit to the temple. She never liked it because of the restrictions she had to face otherwise at home. She hated the show off… Rewa too used to hate it but for a last couple of visits she had loved it. It now made sense.

Preeti was hurting for everyone. Her sister who had fallen for the wrong guy which resulted in Yash collaborating on a mean scheme of things. For her family who lost their sons…one dead and one probably spending his life in jail or a psychiatric ward. Irrespective of what he had done, she felt Yash was a victim of circumstances. She didn’t know if she could ever forgive him but… She hurt for Gautam who had struggled with his demons for last twelve years and finally for herself for being collateral damage everywhere… Right then she made an important decision.

“Gautam… I want to see Gaurang immediately…. Please…”

“Whoa… wait…what is it Preeti?”

“Gautam… have you realised the root cause of all the malice… that happened in our lives…I mean we all are responsible for actions… but here the fort was a catalyst. It ruined lives… I don’t want upcoming generations to bear the brunt of inheritance…” She said running out of breath.

“Preeti…relax dear. I will support you with whatever you decide… Tomorrow I will call Gaurang when your folks are here. But right now just rest…alright?”

He helped her lie on the bed and took his position next to her on the chair holding her hand. She knew he wouldn’t be sleeping however much he was hurting. She looked at his bandages. He saw her and said, “I am fine Preeti… go to sleep.” He kissed her hand.

She smiled as she closed her eyes…the incident that happened twelve years ago gave her the most precious gift…her husband. Later that evening, as she saw him take the dinner trolley provided by the hospital she wondered what if she hadn’t gone to school that fateful day twelve years ago? She wouldn’t have had this gem of a man in her life… no wonder maasa always said, ‘everything happens for a reason…’

Yash out of the closet…

Chapter 35

Preeti squinted at the light streaming in form a tiny corner of the tiled roof. Otherwise it was all dark. She had recognised the place the moment they had taken a turn in the alley. She could never forget the place. Her heart had started racing. She had been rendered unconscious but the quantity of whatever they used in that rag that had covered her mouth back in the café must have been less. She was lying on the floor wide awake. She was shocked to see Yash staring at her with hate in his eyes.

She couldn’t speak as her mouth was covered and hand and feet were bound. Why was he doing it she had thought with tears welling up. It was like the whole world had changed in Alwar in the last six years. She didn’t know who she could trust and whom she couldn’t. First Rewa didi with her apologies and now Yash… Anyone else left? She had thought rolling her eyes.

She shook her head as a fresh wave of nausea had hit her. What the hell had they put on that rag? She had eaten her breakfast long ago…but she felt like taking it all out now…. She thought about Gautam…where was he? He would have been so worried by now. Poor Bhim Singh. She hoped he wouldn’t be at the receiving end of Gautam’s ire. She didn’t know what was happening…but strangely she had a sense of peace when she visualised Gautam…her Gautam…her husband… her masked man… her hero.

They had dragged her out of the vehicle and dumped her in this room…If she remembered right it was the same room where that monster… But it was empty of furniture… there was no cot…thank God. They were three of them including Yash. What the hell did they want? Her limbs were bound but her mouth had been released of the dirty bind. She still felt like heaving. She shook her head to rid of the feeling but a wave of dizziness hit her hard… and she fell back on the hard floor.

She heard the footsteps in a while and blinked as they switched on the sole light bulb in the room. Yash took a chair and sat on it in front of her.  His cronies kept a watch on the door guns drawn out and Yash kept a rifle besides him…what? Yash with a rifle? She looked at him only to see him sneer at her.

“Why Yash Bhaisa…?” She spoke in a hoarse voice. Her voice was getting affected because of her acidity which was at an all-time high.

“What do you want to know Princess…?” He said  stressing on the last word as if it were a cuss word. She was taken aback. He chuckled at her expression.

“What did you think Preeti? You would get everything? After you took away everything from me?”

“What…what did I take from you Bhaisa?” she asked every word taking an effort to speak.

“You took away my respect at home… you took away the rights to the fort and most important of all…you took away the only good thing in my wretched life twelve years ago…my Vikram…” He cried out his voice grading up in volume as he finished the statement.

She couldn’t digest his revelation. Was he on something? She thought. His eyes were stoically blank…they were emotionless as he stared at the wall behind her.

“I…don’t understand… Bhai…bhaisa..”

“…DON’T YOU DARE PRETEND BITCH…” he yelled startling her. She had never heard him raise his voice in all the years she had known him. He was barely a year older to her.

He must have seen her clueless expression. He stood up dropping the rifle to the floor. Did…did he shoot her? She wondered.

He sneered as he helped her sit straight against the wall. Dizziness hit her in waves and she dry heaved. He moved away from her as if she was diseased.

He must have seen her staring at the rifle.

“What? Did you think I couldn’t handle a rifle? That I was as useless as my father and chachaji thought I was? That I wasn’t as good as their prodigal daughter?”

“Are you sure you are talking about ME Bhaisa?”

He paced the room as he spoke. “Everyone in Sengar household thought highly about you Preeti…especially after you left home. You became a rare occurrence. The household which only prided on their sons suddenly turned to be your fans. Of course familiarity breeds contempt. They anyway had a problem with me. I… just hated to study…hated their business… hated to shoot… what was my fault Preeti? What could I do if I wanted to dress in lehenga choli or salwar kameez or sarees? I even cross dressed and once Chachaji caught me…”

Preeti gasped as she heard him. She wondered why she hadn’t seen him do… all that. He was lost in his own world as he continued. “…Bapu and chachaji had only one goal in life…to make me into what I was not… Why Preeti? WHY?” He turned towards her tears flowing from his eyes.  “…was it wrong if I didn’t like what we Rajput boys were supposed to do? Even the other day when you got married they only kept talking about how their ideal daughter saved the day for them…. Don’t look at me like that Preeti…I knew what you and Gautam were upto….”

Her father and uncle spoke so highly about her? Preeti was shocked to know.

“Bhaisa…how did you know about Gautam…?”

Yash gave her a side smile and snorted. “Preeti…you guys are not the only ones awake at night. I saw that night when he had come into your room… that bastard thought he was stealth enough but he couldn’t escape my eyes….that bloody killer…” Preeti looked up suddenly when he said it.

“…He is a bloody killer… He killed the love of my life…the only person who loved me and accepted me for what I was… Bapu used to say I was a piece of crap…a burden on them. Why? Just because I liked guys? I couldn’t help it Preeti. I made a mistake of admitting it before Bapu once. He… he flogged me that day… I was only sixteen. Chachaji taunted me… saying I was immoral. But what was he doing with that Sita? Was that moral…?” He must have seen Preeti’s shocked look. “… I knew everything people were upto. Everyone hated me. But VIkram…he was the light in my dark life…a ray of hope. We …we were to elope after I turned eighteen…”

What the hell was he talking about? “Bhaisa…Vikram is not who you think… He was heterosexual. He also had relations with Rewa didi…”

“…I know about that…in fact that’s how we met. I once caught him jumping across the wall in the dead of the night when he had come to meet Rewa didi. I fell for him…his enigmatic blue eyes caught me in their web…Preeti…it was love at first sight. …”

Preeti was staring at him wide eyed.

“… The next night I helped him through the gate… And before he left he came into my room. The pleasure he gave me…words can’t even describe it… He was my God from then on. I started to love my life…” Then with anger contorting his face he looked back at Preeti. “…And then Rewa didi broke up with him… She found out about our secret rendezvous… what was the problem with her? Why couldn’t she share Vikram? I wasn’t going to step in anywhere…I just…just wanted those few moments of pleasure and she couldn’t even bear to see that? She stopped seeing him and threatened to tell Bapu about it all…”

Preeti’s head was reeling and the feel of the nausea was rapidly raising its head. She didn’t know how much more she would last. She was shocked beyond capacity with all that she was hearing.

Yash was oblivious to her. “You know Preeti… Vikram stopped coming over…JUST STOPPED… I started to crave him… my life had lost its meaning totally… and then one day he called me… He said he wanted the details of the locker and the map for the Gagorn fort. Apparently Rewa didi had told him about it. Do you know, Preeti…? There is a treasure buried under one of the standing pillars….I read about it in the archives available in our library at that time. I spoke to Maasa indirectly and she vindicated the information….Vikram promised to be with me forever if I could get him the details. But then who would give them to me? I then overheard Bapu saying… the Gagorn fort would be inherited by Rewa didi or you. He added that he didn’t trust Rewa didi enough so I knew eventually it would be inherited by you. Chachaji said you were aware of it all…”

What? “No bhaisa…I had never even heard of the fort till I was told about the signatures…”

“…DON’T LIE TO ME…. I saw the deed and other information Chachaji had in a brass box. He had hidden them in your room for safekeeping…”

“…I. Really don’t know about any brass box Bhaisa…” Preeti pleaded amidst bile rising up her throat.

But Yash pretended as if she wasn’t present. “… I promised Vikram I would get him the brass box. But I could never enter your room and search… I couldn’t even ask Rewa didi…she would have caught me. So…when I told this to Vikram he made a plan… to kidnap you and get the information out of you… then I would go to your room and directly take the brass box from its hidden place. So I told Sukhi uncle to collect a package for bapu from this place. That Dumb Sukhi didn’t even check with Bapu and drove here. I was told only you were going to school that day. I hadn’t anticipated Rohit to be in the car as well…..” Yash was sobbing. “…Vikram  shot Sukhi and the impact of the car killed Rohit… Now that wasn’t my fault…”

He looked at Preeti. “…But you…You refused to give him any information… Preeti I was right there…I was praying you would tell him so that he would release you and we could get what we wanted…. But you refused. Even when he was…and then that bastard Gautam came along and I made a lucky escape while he hit them all. I saw him take you to the hospital…”

Preeti was crying with pain…her heart breaking into pieces knowing her cousin was the one responsible for all her misery.

“…I rushed in here to see Vikram badly injured. I revived him and told him you were in the hospital. He managed to get himself up and going. He was so brave… I drove him to the hospital. He knew you would be there… But that Gautam…he was there too. He murdered my Vikram with his bare hands…”

Yash paused in front of her. “…Preeti…I promised myself I would avenge Vikram’s death. But Gautam disappeared…everything changed after that day… everybody mourned for Rohit…pitied you…eventually when business fell they pitied Rewa didi… she then met Suyash…you escaped to Mumbai. But what about ME? NO one thought about me…. I met other guys but no one could match up to Vikram. I decided the only way to get attention was to become what Bapu wanted. So I tried. I learnt shooting… my shot was good right?” He mockingly pointed at her bandaged arm. “..I then put my energy into business and they were happy. When Rewa didi was seeing Suyash I was happy that she would be out of the way soon. I had planned to get the documents to Mumbai and make you sign them off to me. I would then become the sole owner of the Gagorn fort. But that Gautam came in again…. I recognised that asshole right away. He wanted to marry Rewa didi for the fort… I knew she was already married to Suyash so didn’t bother much but then…on the wedding day…you stepped in. the prodigal daughter saved the family honour and now… now you are all set to transfer the deeds in Gautam’s name?”

“Bhaisa… I am sorry…I didn’t know anything….”

“You know… you can still do things right…I have got the papers here. Sign it off in Gautam’s name and he will in turn transfer it to me instead of that Romila Devi…” he stood getting a bunch of papers.

He looked at the surprised Preeti and said, “Oh, By the way your dear husband is on his way. Once he signs this over…I will kill him in the same way he killed my beloved Vikram…”

“IN YOUR DREAMS ASSHOLE…” a voice boomed and Preeti’s heart soared. Gautam was here…

who took Preeti?

Chapter 34

Gautam concluded his meeting with Tanveer Raisingh and a private detective, he had hired some time back to help him with the investigation he had been doing. First was to look into the event that happened twelve years ago and second, looking for his birth mother. He wanted Tanveer’s help at a personal level so that anything they did didn’t cross the legal boundaries. His phone was switched off. He wasn’t comfortable with it but the location of the Crime Branch head office was currently under wraps and it was compulsory for visitors to keep their phones switched off.

He hadn’t revealed anything about the meeting to Preeti. She would have insisted on being here. But he didn’t want to endanger her. At least back home Bhim Singh was watching over the house which had a good electronic security system in place. But still it was barely over an hour and he was restless. He wanted to hear her voice…to assure himself she was safe.

They had tried to unearth information from everything they had found so far. But the questions still remained. Who wanted to hurt Preeti twelve years ago? And why? Who gave Vikram the information about them being in the alley and why did Sukhi drive them there? Who killed Sukhi and little Rohit? He was thinking about those threatening messages. Who was against her signing the documents? Why did Romila Devi or anyone else want the ruined fort? The restoration was not affordable for Romila Devi… then… for what?

Tanveer Raisingh was helping him with getting further details about the law for the Gagorn fort acquisition. Somehow his gut feeling had told him the two were linked. They were missing something vital. The rifles in her parent’s home were also intact. In fact there were no finger prints on them nor any evidence of recent usage. Everyone’s alibi had checked out fine… Her father, tayaji and Yash. Even for the burner phone. There was no evidence of money transfers for any sniper… His blood boiled to think of someone harming Preeti. Who the hell was that? And the biggest question remained…. WHY?

He switched on his phone immediately as he left Tanveer’s building and saw a spate of missed calls from Bhim Singh… His heart skipped a beat and he wasted no time in calling him back as he started his car.

All blood drained from his face as he heard the frantic man on the other end. Preeti was kidnapped. He got out of his vehicle and ran back towards Tanveer’s building.

His anger knew no bounds. He wanted the person responsible…he would kill him with bare hands. He called Tanveer from the parking lot and updated him. The local police too had sprung into action. Bhim Singh thankfully had informed them. Preeti’s phone was dropped and crushed outside the Café. Fortunately she had informed Bhim Singh about meeting her cousin. A team of police was sent to Sengar house to bring in Yash for questioning. But he wasn’t there and no one knew about his whereabouts.

Time was running out and Gautam was frustrated. He wanted to punch someone…his eyes kept welling up every time he thought about her smile… her concerned eyes when she knew he was in turmoil…her adoration towards him and her blind trust… Her trust on her folks…she still believed someone was using her family. No wonder she went to meet her cousin. Oh God … what would he do if something happened to her? He couldn’t survive the blow… No…he had to find her…she had to be safe. Whoever had her… also wanted the fort… there was only one way to know that. He called Romila Devi.

“Hello Gautam…to what do I owe the pleasure of your call?”

“Preeti has been kidnapped…”

“WHAT? Wait…Gautam is it some way you are delaying tomorrow’s signing procedure? If so then you will never know about your birth mother…I Swear on the Almighty…”

He tried to keep his cool. Preeti’s safety was of utmost importance. He swallowed his anger and spoke.

“Romila Devi… Preeti had received threatening messages for not signing. Whoever did that has her. Most probably her cousin Yash Sengar has some hand in it but we need to know why…we have to find her…”

Silence… did he hear sobs?

“..That bastard Yash…. He wasn’t satisfied ruining my son that now he wants what belongs to me?”

Was she smoking weed? She made no sense at all.

“What are you saying Romila Devi?”

“ VIk…Vikram was heterosexual…I think you know that… Yash was involved with him twelve years ago… that pansy had called Vikram to that godforsaken alley and my … my Vikram fell into his trap…”

She wailed but wasn’t still making sense. He ended the call.

Tanveer was hearing this conversation and simultaneously instructed the lady Inspector to pick up Romila Devi for questioning.

“Gautam…” Tanveer called  out to him. “…We have got the footage of the vehicle which took Ms. Sengar…”

“…Mrs. Rathore… or Preeti…” Gautam spoke cutting his short.

Tanveer smiled and continued. “…Preeti was taken in a blue coloured versa. But the number plates were fake. We are following up other CCTV footages obtained across the roads taken….”

“…Which direction did they go Tanveer…?”

“Towards Tijara…”

Oh God they were taking her to the same location…. That alley in…

“Morodi”

“Morodi”

They both said together and Gautam quickly sat in Tanveer’s vehicle as they drove towards the direction…

Gautam looked at the passing scenery his anger building up… His poor Preeti had to face the nightmare all over again. That place … that huge godown in Morodi was where he had first found her.

If only he knew the reason for her suffering he would have moved heaven and earth to end it. But he was determined to give her the closure this time. The mastermind…probably Yash… had to pay for what he had done. Inspector Tanveer kept getting updates from the CCTV footages regularly. They were on track. However after Kishangarh the Versa disappeared and was not spotted. But they both knew she was been taken to that godforsaken place from twelve years ago…

As they crouched slowly on the muddy road…some shortcut which Tanveer took up, Gautam knew only one way to keep his rising anxiety in check. He shut his eyes and brought in the vision of his beautiful Preeti. Just last evening the way she had given herself up in the red room. She had trusted him whole heartedly. It had taken all his anxiety away… he had felt relieved and calm… he usually did whenever she was around. The very vision of her shattering in his arms gave him the determination to keep going toady. He had to be strong for her…

They soon reached the road leading to Morodi. Tanveer parked almost a kilometre away.

There were few other local police with them and a harried looking Bhim Singh also had joined him.

Gautam had asked Bhim Singh to get his revolver along. He had kept his licenced revolver in his locker and was accessible only to Bhim Singh besides him. Tanveer raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything.

Holding his revolver in position he strutted towards the alley where his life had changed twelve years ago… His mobile phone buzzed with an incoming message. He didn’t want to get distracted but you never knew….It was from a private number. He checked the message.

Come alone….else she is dead…

Preeti gets kidnapped…

Chapter 33

Preeti woke up next morning to a feeling of shiver… she couldn’t fathom if she had a nightmare or not. But she knew without looking around that Gautam wasn’t in the room. She sat up and stretched. She hugged her naked torso and looked down at her sore nipples. The red marks still evident. She remembered the earlier evening with a blush spreading on her face; yearn for him clenching her insides. She had to press her inner thighs against each other to control the burst of climax threatening the doorsteps of her apex.

She fell back on the bed spreading her arms on his huge bed. She pulled his pillow on her face taking in his scent… Oh God how much she missed him already… she smiled.

She remembered asking him about the red marks on his chest that she had seen on couple of occasions. She wanted the details yesterday. He had hesitated but she had held his hands and looked into his beautiful eyes and said… “No more secrets…” He had hugged her and had revealed the self-punishment lessons he had been taught by his mentor, and how he had practised it. She had cried for him and had vowed to change the release pattern from self- punishment to passion. On her insistence he had taken her to his red room. She saw the gleam in his eyes and instantly knew what gave him gratification. However twisted it may have seemed she knew she would make it pleasurable for him. She wanted to be his submissive…as she had read about it. But he was adamant because of her hand. She knew in her heart… that’s what he had wanted.  She wore the special leather outfit barely covering anything on her body.

He had said, “Preeti… I am going to increase the pleasure and pain combination little by little… you have to tell me when it reaches your threshold…i.e. when you feel you can’t have it anymore… just say… ‘RED’” She had nodded.

He had inserted something like a little metal ball into her soft sheath down and the two threads like parts touched her clitoris. She was already wet with anticipation… He then got the nipple clamps and put them on either of her breasts. He had said it would pain but she wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of the piercing sensation on her nipples. He stood before her in his nude glory…already at full mast. He held the remote control for the ball inside her and another rope for her clamps. She stood holding the nightstand. And he instructed her to bend down as she exposed her backside to his waiting hands.

She heard him take something from the closet behind. In the next moment without warning there was a thump on her entrance. Wait…. Did he hit her? But instead of the pain it gave her a strange sensation… and to her surprise she wanted more. And then she felt the vibration inside her…her walls were being stimulated all at once… Her indents were being touched upon continuously…oh God… But the moment she tried to arch her back the clamps dug deep and she yelped. He increased the vibration and once again she felt the soft whip land on her apex… But when she moved in reaction to the heavenly sensation the clamps brought her back…

The series continued till she exploded… time and again…and the pain only intensifying the pleasure she had. He released her soon and dropped her on the bed on her back. The next moment he slammed into her taking in her sore nipples into his mouth to soothe them but which only aroused her all the more.  She shattered within four strokes of his huge manhood and he didn’t last much and her insides clenched once again. He screamed her name as he came with his release gushing into her womanhood… He held her to him tightly…

He had cleaned her with a wet cloth and carried her to his room where they had a proper bath. Rather, he gave her a bath… her skin coming up alive as his rough palms touched each and every inch of her soft flesh. She had climaxed on him as the hot shower water cascaded on them joined together… He had looked into her eyes and said, “Preeti… I…I love you darling… I love you…”

She had cried and hugged him tightly as he had finally pumped a last time and released himself. Finally he had said the golden words she had longed to hear. She knew he loved her… but hearing it from the horse’s mouth gave her a strange sense of fulfilment.

She was smiling all the way to the kitchen today to fix her something. She had freshened up and was checking on her bandage. Her heart melted thinking of how careful he had been throughout last evening,  not to exert pressure on her hand or get the bandage wet. She wiped the tears away and picked up the tea pot. Her eyes fell on the note stuck on the refrigerator. She smiled once again. Her man didn’t like to text, he preferred to write. She kissed the note and took it to the counter where she sat and began to read.

Hey love…

Have a meeting … couldn’t be postponed. Will be back ASAP. The signing will be done tomorrow… rest up…it’s a long drive tomorrow…

P.S. breakfast on the counter in the casserole.

-GR

She smiled shaking her head. She opened the casserole to see her favourite Gobi parathas. Her man was spoiling her rotten she thought.

As she finished her breakfast her phone rang. She rushed to the bedroom where she had left it charging. Panting she saw the call was from her maternal home. Who was calling she thought with a pang of home sickness.

“Hello?”

“Preeti?”

“Yash bhai…is that you?”

“Yea… uh… can we meet? There is something important I have to tell you.”

What did he want?

“..How is maasa… ma, tayiji…”

“…Preeti everyone’s doing fine… I just have to speak with you…”

“Um…ok Yash Bhai… come home.” She loved to call this place home. She thought smiling.

“… No Preeti not at your home. Can you come over to Alwar bypass road? There is this new Kopcha café . It…uh…belongs to a friend of mine. There won’t be any disturbance and they have your favourite Irish coffee as well…”

Preeti was stunned. Yash had remembered her favourite coffee type. She knew as kids they wold force Sukhi uncle to get them goodies on cheat days when their parents permitted. It was rare but she always ordered Irish coffee. Her eyes filled and she pinched her nose.

“..ok…Yashbhai… see you in half an hour?”

“Ok Preeti..thanks..”

She was in a lovely place with her husband… now only if she could bridge the gap with her maternal home…at least with her cousins then things would be falling in place. She was glad she was meeting Yash. At least she could warn him about someone probably using the rifle. Maybe he could throw some light on what was happening?

She quickly dressed and Bhim Singh drove her to the venue.

She pulled out her mobile en route and checked if Gautam had texted. There were no new messages. She was a little disappointed but that’s how he was… she wished she could finish the signing ASAP so that he could finally meet his mother. Her eyes welled up thinking about how much he had suffered. A fresh wave of giddiness passed her and she tried to calm down by deep breathing.

She wondered if she should cancel the meet with Yash but she needed answers as well.

And now Yash was the only one who had some of those answers…

She reached Kopcha café and BhimSingh was asked to park it in their official parking spot that was a little away. He wasn’t happy but she assured him she was in the café with her cousin and that shouldn’t be a problem. Besides she had his number on speed dial. He reluctantly agreed and left for the parking. It was 10.30 AM and the café had probably just opened for business. There was no one at the entrance. Was Yash waiting inside? She decided to walk in.

She turned to go inside when suddenly a hand grabbed her from behind, he held her right arm sending excruciating pain throughout her body from her wound. Before she could realise what was happening the another hand clamped her face and she felt the wet cloth on her nose… She heard a vehicle come over as rough pair of hands pushed her inside and the doors closed.

“Sorry Preeti… you left me with no choice…” She heard Yash, his words fading into the distance as darkness took over.

the rifle?

Chapter 32

As sleep claimed her the last thought she had, was the vision of watching her tayaji and father trying to force Yash to try to shoot. Yash could never learn for nuts… but the crackle of the rifle…. Crackle…Oh God… She woke up with a start.

“GAUTAM…Gautam…” he was fast asleep.  He woke up with a start.

“What… what is it Preeti?” his face etched with fatigue and worry.

“That crackle… that sound…shot…I have heard it before…. So many times…oh God how could I forget…?”

“Wait a minute…Preeti…you aren’t making sense…”

“Gautam… I heard a sound…like a crackle…before…before I was shot that day in Kota…”

That got him all alert. He sat up straight. He held her hand nodding his head.

“Gautam… I…I know that sound…very well. We had a couple of those rifles at home. My bapu and tayaji used to practise their targets…I have seen them trying to teach Yash for years…H ecouldnt learn for nuts. But though I wasn’t allowed I used to watch hidden from their view. I loved that sound… I can recognise that distinct crackle anywhere… That was our rifle…” She held his hands tightly as tears flowed down wetting his t shirt. “… Gautam someone used OUR rifle to shoot at me…”

Gautam held her till she calmed down and immediately placed a call to both Bhim Singh and Tanveer Raisingh. Tanveer was awaiting the ballistic reports whatever the forensics could manage. But it was difficult because they couldn’t find the shells or any casing of the bullet. Besides it was tiny and grazed her hand… He promised to check with her folks if they had lent the rifle to anyone. Meanwhile he said he would also help local police get call details of the mysterious text sender.

Finally it was 6AM when they finally went to sleep.

Gautam woke her up at around 11AM.  She smiled as he kissed her good morning. She looked into his eyes… the storm was missing but the sadness still remained. She held his cheeks. “Gautam… we will find your mother. Do you remember her face? Anything?”

He looked at the wall in front lost in thought and after a stoic silence he shook his head. “..I just remember her anklets. She loved them. She had brown eyes which always shone whenever she hugged me…That’s it. I don’t remember her voice too…she had me young… so she should be somewhere between mid to early 60s…”

“But Gautam…how does RomilaDevi know about her where abouts?”

“…Preeti…I know this is all fucked up…but my mother was my mentor’s keep. He once told me in a drunken stupor when Vikram had attempted to rape Narmada. Mentor was upset that his son turned out like that and spilled the beans. So apparently I was his son from another lay who wasn’t his wife. A lay that he was apparently in love with…weird isn’t it? But that’s why he insisted on bringing me up. Romila Devi had known that all along and after he died twelve years ago she told me she knew about my ma. She wanted Gagorn in return for….”

“…We will find your mother… Tell me when do we go to Kota?”

“I have texted Mr.Ranawat…he will set up a date at the earliest. It should coincide with the day registrations are done. Otherwise we have to make two visits for nothing…”

His phone buzzed. It was Tanveer Raisingh. Did the man ever sleep she wondered… Gautam answered the phone and clicked on the speaker. She sat close to him as he hugged her.

“Hello Tanveer, Preeti is here too…anything come up?”

“Ya… Listen carefully. The texts had been made from Ms. Sengar’s house… the number though was a burner. It’s no longer in use. But the same number was active in Kota near the district court the day you guys were there. The local police team is on its way to Sengar house to question people there…. You two take care.”

He disconnected the call and Gautam held Preeti tightly as if she would disappear. After the shitty news she wanted the same.

“I don’t believe this Gautam… why does my family want me hurt or…dead?” Preeti was numb with the revelation…she didn’t even feel like crying anymore. She was deriving strength from the gorgeous man next to her. She hugged him back and digging her head in his chest took in his scent…

They stayed like that for a while. Preeti suddenly sat straight and asked, “Can I ask you something Gautam?

He nodded.

“You had said Rewa didi was in love with Vikram twelve years ago. But where did they meet? I mean…we didn’t have any mobile phones with us. Our visits to any place were taken care of by the Sukhi Uncle… how did she get to leave the house?”

Gautam sighed. “Preeti… Vikram had this insatiable lust for sex but with a distorted mentality… He had hyper sexuality…I found out later…” he must have seen confusion on her face and explained. “… It’s like a bipolar disorder in itself. It’s a dysfunctional preoccupation with sexual fantasies, urges, or behaviours that are difficult to control. Rewa realised this but only after dating him for two months. Vikram had this dashing personality which drew young women towards him like ants to sugar… Rewa never told me how and where she met him. I have no clue about the women he dated either… He never spoke about that at home as the mentor didn’t like it…”

“Gautam…there has to be some way she made it to meet him. Because we girls were never allowed to leave home and if we did I was always with her…” Preeti tried to remember but drew a blank.

“Gautam… That monster…er Vikram also asked me about the key to some locker and map…. What was all that?”

“I have read your report Preeti…all over again when I met Tanveer yesterday. I tried to figure out but have no clue.”

“Gautam…why did you meet Tanveer yesterday…all of a sudden?”

GAutam held her tightly and then released her. He stood and started to pace the room.

“Preeti my mentor had this twisted idea of changing the world. He had trained Vikram and me from childhood…er… in use of firearms, combat skills, wrestling etc. He also trained a few local boys. But they were not as good as us. In fact Vikram and I were on par with regards to strength. But considering that he was impulsive, mentor gave me the responsibility of purely coordinating and planning missions. He started with small tasks like hitting a chain snatcher or wife beater…something like that. Later that year in 2008 he took up clandestine jobs for some people in the government to get rid of the dangerous criminals out on bail. Made quite a fortune in the process. What mentor didn’t realise in his twisted quest to make money and clean the streets of those thugs was, he was creating a monster at home. Though VIkram was supposed to only beat the shit out of them and maim them for life he went for the jugular. He loved the feel of the kill. We were taught to kill without leaving traces behind…to make it neat as well. Vikram grew more and more confident with every kill…  That day when he went after you, I wasn’t aware of the fact. It wasn’t a planned mission. In fact mentor called me to check on him and I found he had gone on some mission without informing us. Mentor sent me after him…and the rest you know. Preeti, Tanveer said he had told you about those other murders …they were carried out by Vikram…I was involved in identifying the target and fool proofing his entry into their homes. Actually like I said, the plan was to disable the prey but Vikram killed them and… before killing… he…he raped them…” Gautam rubbed his hand over his face for the umpteenth time. She knew he was upset but he had to get it out… He needed the release too.

“Preeti…I met with Tanveer to prove my innocence in those murders. The biggest proof was Vikram was left handed and I am right handed…. But I admitted… eliminating Vikram…”

Preeti stood up gasping. “Gautam… will you… will you be arrested?”

“I don’t know Preeti… I really don’t know… But I have requested him to delay things till we find out the mastermind behind that incident…”

Preeti’s heart fell but now was not the time for remorse or feeling bad but to gear up and fight. She had to have the closure.

One question was still troubling her.

“Gautam…why did you say it was a matter of life and death when the signature didn’t take place? I know you wanted to know about your birth mother…”

“…Preeti my mother … my birth mother is very sick apparently and Romila Devi is the one keeping her alive. I don’t know how, where… She will give me the details only when we hand over the deed to her… she threatened… if in the next one month the deed wasn’t done then she would withdraw the treatment… and…”

Preeti rushed to him and hugged him tightly… “We will find your mother Gautam… promise…”

Their love making that morning exceeded all limits of passion sending them to new pinnacles of euphoria…they would remember for ages to come…

And more secrets….

Chapter 31

“Preeti… Rewa swears she didn’t tell Vikram anything about you visiting school that day because she had broken up with him by then. She had found out about his weird sexual preferences. He …liked to sleep around with both young boys and girls… younger the better…” Preeti gasped as she took in the information. He continued “… I have been trying to fit the missing piece for puzzle for a long time. Even Rewa’s revelation didn’t help. So I met the only person I could rely on. Tanveer… he was my friend from school but I think you know that by now…” he looked at Preeti.

She nodded and stretched on the cot…no more conscious of her nakedness…

He walked towards her. Even in the dark she could see he was smiling. “Sweetheart… you keep doing that and I won’t be able to focus…”

She went on her knees and raised her hands towards him. He came closer and she snaked them around his neck pulling his neck for a quick kiss. He pecked at her lips and lifted up his head. They stared into each other’s eyes. Preeti’s eyes welled up and the emotion stared to flow down her cheeks. He cupped her face wiping her cheeks with his rough thumbs. “Don’t…darling… don’t cry… you are strong…”

She got her hands down wincing in pain as the stretch had probably pulled the skin around the wound. He immediately sat next to her holding her injured hand carefully as though it were fragile. Bending down he kissed her hand starting from the fingertips to her wrist, throughout the forearm…then a light kiss on her bandage. Seeing his ode she couldn’t hold it any longer and broke into huge sobs. He took her by the shoulders and pulled her down with him. He dragged the comforter over them as he carefully pulled her close to avoid hurting her arm. She didn’t know how long she had cried… she felt calm at the end of her outburst. Only Gautam had the power to do that for her.

He stroked her soft back as she rested her head in the crook of his arm their chests facing each other. “Preeti… you have to be really strong now. This is not over still…I won’t rest…unless I find the person responsible for the… incident.”

It was then she suddenly remembered the threatening text messages. She told him about them and he immediately got out of the bed and rushed to her room without even bothering to put on a pair of boxers. He came back with her phone. She wore his t-shirt driving comfort from the musky heat. She unlocked the phone for him and showed him the messages. After a string of lewd cuss words that she had never heard before in her life, he called Bhim Singh. He gave him the details. He then called Tanveer Raisingh who promised to look into the matter to check the source of the messages. He paced the room like a mad animal. She saw the time it was almost 3AM and they were wide awake.

She was still restless. “Gautam… what is this…about the document signing…I will do it in a jiffy for you. I don’t want any fort. But why does Romila Devi want it so much that… you were ready to do… um … get married for that?”

He came to her and sat next to her on the bed. He held her hand interlocking his fingers. She realised he always held her hands whenever he was stressed. She covered their locked hands with her palm and nodded for him to continue.

“Romila Devi has a hold over me…”

She squeezed his hands to prod him. He looked down holing his upper lip between his teeth. She saw his eyes watering… She turned towards him and going on her knees in front of him, pulled his head to her bosom. She held him through the shudders that passed his body. He held her tightly as he released pent up emotions. She kissed his head muttering sweet nothings to pacify him. She was crying inside…seeing him hurt. This giant of a man was hiding so much within. He was like a little clueless baby… She wouldn’t give up on him she thought. She was now determined to fight and win…along with him…step by step. No matter what, she was definitely in for a long haul for both their sakes.

Slowly he sat resting his head on the back rest. She sat next to him and he hugged her close.

“Gautam…are you alright? Looks like my crying skills have rubbed on you as well…”

He chuckled with that sexy sound as he pulled her closer resting his head on hers.

“Gautam…?”

“Hmm..”

“Please tell me… what happened now… what triggered that?”

“Preeti…it was those messages ….I can’t bear to lose you… lose anymore…” he said his voice hoarse. He kissed her head and continued. “…my life has always cut me a shitty deal… first my birth mother whom I remember…loved me to bits but gave me away to this monstrous family… then Tanveer came along but I had to cut ties with him. I had a loving sister Narmada but I want allowed to meet her often… And then you entered my life like a breath of fresh air… pure, innocent untainted… like a balm to my wounds. Something connected that day between us in the hospital twelve years ago. But you were barely sixteen… I thought it was just a spur of the moment infatuation. But no… I couldn’t stay away. I kept trailing you…”

Preeti nodded. “…I knew you were around Gautam… I felt safe…”

He smiled. “…don’t get me wrong Preeti, I wasn’t stalking you. What I… felt for you was beyond protectiveness. I decided to let go when you moved to Mumbai. I tried my best for four years but I couldn’t… I always prided in my self-control. No one could pierce that shield around my heart. But I saw you in Mumbai and I was a goner… all over again. My supressed feelings came up to the surface with a force that I couldn’t control them….”

Preeti looked up and cupped his cheeks. “…Why didn’t you say something? Why didn’t you come and meet me? I have waited twelve years Gautam… to meet you… Even I had felt that connection in the hospital…”

“…Preeti I was a tormented soul corroded of everything human by what life had offered till twelve years ago. You … you made me want to be human again. But then I wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of emotions when we first met in that elevator… I couldn’t help myself. Still can’t Preeti… And if something were to happen to you then I don’t think I can survive that…” his voice cracked.

“Gautam nothing is going to happen to me when you are around…ok? Now tell me what’s Romila Devi got? What is that sword hanging over your head?”

He took a deep breath and said. “She has information about my mother…my birth mother. She will give me the details only if she gets the Gagorn fort. That’s why I had wanted…”

“…to marry one of the Sengar girls…isn’t it?” She completed. He nodded and looked away.

“Don’t worry Gautam… we will go to Kota at the earliest and get done with the signatures…”

He nodded. They decided to catch a few winks before morning.

“Um…Gautam where were you two nights before… I came after you but heard you break down… it broke my heart as well…”

He tightened his hold. “Preeti… I was in the red room downstairs…punishing myself….”

Preeti’s heart stopped. She knew about his fascination for BDSM and had read about punishments as well. So those red marks on his chest… were they…? Her eyes well up again…

 “Why Gautam… why the punishment?”

“…Because I hurt you… both, on the day we tied the knot and in Kota…”

She shook her head and held his hands in hers. Facing him she said, “Promise me Gautam… henceforth whenever you get this stupid notion of having hurt me…you will talk to me…please.”

He nodded.

“Um Gautam…do you want me to go back…to my room?”

Pulling her close he spooned her. “Shut up little Vixen…” he growled into her ears sending shudders through her body. “…you are my wife…and … this is your room…OUR room…in OUR house…”

Preeti had never felt happier in her life. She felt complete today…she felt she was completely his.

She heard his light snores soon after they went to bed together. But sleep eluded her. There was something at the back of her head which still refused to go, ever since she was hit… what was it?

secrets tumbling out….

Chapter 30

Preeti was suddenly woken up by a clicking sound. She jerked up and massaged a kink in her neck. She was on the drawing room couch waiting for Gautam where she must have fallen asleep.  She stood and straightened her satin night gown which she had picked from the options in the cupboard. She waited as she heard the footsteps. She saw his silhouette enter the room and halt… as he caught her standing in the dark. He moved back to the entrance and switched on the light. She squinted at the sudden onslaught on her vision. His eyes narrowed as he saw her in the skimpy outfit.

He cleared his throat. “Why are you still awake Preeti…?”

“I..um …I was waiting for you…”

“…I had told you not to…” He abruptly said

“…but I wanted to…” She was not the one to let go.

He held his hands on his hips and moved towards her. She folded her hands and winced at the sudden pull in her injured hand. Suddenly he was next to her. Gently holding her right elbow he looked at the bandage intensely. “Dr, Shekhawat had said you were fine. Is it still bad?” he asked gently.

She raised her other hand to cup his cheek. “I am absolutely fine and I have a surprise for you…” Before he could react she held his hand and dragged him to the dining table. She switched on the lights in the area to reveal a beautiful cake decorated by… Oh God…fondant whips cuffs and ropes. He couldn’t help but smile and that lit up his face.

She gave him a knife and held his palm around it as they cut the cake together. She removed a neatly cut piece and held it close to his mouth as he took a bite. He took the piece from her hand and held it out for her to take a bite. Not only did she eat it, she also licked the cream off his fingers… He shook his head smiling licked his fingers all over again staring at her with those beautiful brown orbs. Preeti blushed and looked down at her feet.

He came closer mere inches from her body. He held her chin with is bent index finger and raised her face up…

“What is all this Preeti?” He asked so softly she curled her toes to fight the sensation running through her body.

“Just… just a little celebration…”

“…and…what is the celebration about?”

“…um… what about the return of happy times?”

Gautam stared into her eyes intently. “Preeti…what’s going on?”

“Gautam consider this a thank you offer, ok?”

“Preeti stop taking in riddles…”

“…No I am serious… I have a lot to thank you for… For saving my life all those years ago, for looking over my well-being for last twelve years and always taking care of me…like you did when I got injured.”

“Let it go Preeti…” He said softly walking away towards the window.

She walked behind him and hugged him from the back.  He stiffened but she tightened her hold and he relaxed. She buried her head in his back.  He turned around and held her careful of her bandaged hand. He buried his nose in her hair and took in a deep breath. She laid her head in the crook of his neck her favourite place and rained light kisses there. She ran her palms up his back and he tightened his hold. She pushed her pelvis ahead felt his arousal prodding at her stomach. She looked up into his eyes and saw raw hunger.  Holding his face she pulled him towards her. Their lips met with an intensity she hadn’t thought of. It was as if he was making up for their lack of physical intimacy. He devoured her hungrily. After what seemed like ages he released her lips and lifted her looking into her eyes as if unsure. She hooked her hands around his neck and kissed his forehead. Holding her, he almost ran upstairs to his room and let her down only to open his room.

He pulled her in with him and closed the door. Again picking her up, he took her to his bed gently laying her on it. In record time he freed them off their clothes. He quickly got between her legs, his manhood eager at her wet entrance. She wound her legs around him and raised her hands up to grip the head board railing of his cot. That raised her breasts and she was thrilled to see the gleam of want in his eyes further arousing her. The slight pain in her hand forgotten…. She only saw him. In the next moment he slammed into her with a force that shook her insides and started the wave of climax even before he started the thrusts. Taking an erect nipple in his mouth he sucked on it…while continuously thrusting in and out of her wetness. Suddenly he increased his pace and she was almost exhausted trying to keep up with him. He got the nipple between his teeth and gave it a gently tug. She shattered with a scream and he closed her mouth with his. He gave the final thrusts and released into her with a sound she had never heard before. He screamed her name as well…. He fell on her and they held each other tightly slowly descending from the throes of passion they just shared.

He sank into the bed besides her and she wondered if he would ask her to go back to her room. But he spooned her pulling her close to him her back touching his chest. He rained kissed on her head and she was so overwhelmed she couldn’t help the sob from escaping her mouth.  He immediately put her on her back and came right over her balancing on his fore arms. “What is it dear?”

“Gautam… I missed you… like hell… I …I can’t live without you… or with you angry or upset with me…”

“…hey hey…” he palmed her cheek and she leaned into it. “…no darling…I am not angry…not at all… I …I missed you too sweet heart… every single moment.” He bent and claimed her lips in a slow kiss. He gently pulled her lower lip…

“Gautam?”

“Yes darling…”

“… I love you…I hope you know that…”

He nodded smiling at her. She knew he did too…she was now sure of it. Would he ever tell her?

She held his cheeks in her palms and said. “Don’t…ever…don’t ever leave me… Don’t shut me out… please…”

He kissed her palms on either side. “What is it Preeti?”

“Gautam…I am ready to sign those papers…the documents for the fort.”

He stilled and got up to sit on the bed resting his back to the head board. She knew she couldn’t lose the moment. She moved towards him and sat on his lap facing him. Holding his face in her hands she looked into his eyes…shining brightly in the night lamp hues.

“Gautam…there is something I want to admit…”

He stared at her expressionless.

“I…I met an Inspector from Crime Branch…Tanveer Raisingh…”

“…I know sweet heart…” He said softly. And it was her turn to be surprised.

“Don’t be surprised… I have kept detailed tabs on you for twelve years in Alwar and Mumbai…don’t you think I would have done so when you got back here as well?”

“So…you knew…”

“…Yes I saw you got to their office that morning.”

How come she hadn’t known? She was sure she had checked…

“…so Gautam…you weren’t angry…?”

He held her face on one side… “Why the hell would I be angry darling?”

“..That I went behind your back…but Gautam …I wanted to help you… and also get closure… But…But I didn’t reveal anything about you…”

Gautam chuckled. He turned her around and made her sit between his legs her back resting on his chest. Oh how she loved this feel. She could sit like this all her life.

“Preeti… ?”

“Hmmm…?”

“…I met Tanveer today… Me and Gaurang were in a meeting with him…”

She squeezed his hands and he interlocked his fingers with hers as if deriving strength from her.

“Gautam… he suspects you killed those people twelve years back as well as that… monster.”

“..Yea…I … Preeti… will you…hate me …if I tell you…I killed someone?”

She raised her hand and held his face behind. She looked up tilting her head and pulled his face. She kissed him with all the love in her heart.

“Gautam…darling I trust you…more than anything in this world. Whatever you tell me, it’s not going to change my opinion of you…”

He kissed her all over her face and hugged her from the back placing his chin on her head. She waited giving him time to gather his thoughts. “Preeti… I have …killed someone…that monster who had…”

“…I know Gautam…I am alive only because of that…”

“…on the other hand…Preeti…what does that make me? I …I killed my foster brother. My mentor …my so-called father who brought me up… he killed himself because of that….”

“…Gautam…you saved two of us …me and Narmada…”

She told him about what Narmada had shared about his childhood. He sighed into her hair and tightened his grip on her hand.

“Gautam…?”

“Yes..”

“Do you remember you had said, there was something unsolved about what happened 12 years ago?”

He nodded. “Gautam…actually on the day we got married, Rewa didi was apologising and crying for what she did 12 years ago…do you know about it?”

“..Preeti…Rewa admitted this to me on the day we got engaged.  Suyash was there too. This was just before you came looking out for her. She… she was in love with Vikram 12 years ago. In fact he had cheated her into pursuing an affair with him. He did that with many other unsuspecting girls”

“…Oh… but how did we reach that alley? I have always wondered about it for the last 12 years Gautam…”

Gautam stood and walked towards the window in his naked glory. Preeti only ogled at him. His well-toned back…  The same back which she had held to pull him towards her body as they fell apart in each other’s arms every time they came together… The same broad shoulders which carried so much burden that he had not even known to unload it somewhere…on someone.

As Gautam stood gathering his thoughts again, she patiently waited. Her eyes well up thinking about a song which reminded her of the enigma standing at the window.

….Tu hoga zara paagal, tune mujhko hai chuna

Kaise tune ankahaa, tune ankahaa sab sunaa…..

Gautam’s life…

Chapter 29

Preeti took her medicine dose and entered the drawing room to see Narmada holding a throw pillow close to her as she reclined on the sofa staring into space. She moved as Preeti sat next to her. She was very tight in anticipation.

Narmada looked at her and gave a sad smile. “Bhabhisa… Bhai entered the Singh household at the age of four. I don’t know when exactly our father got him home …” Preeti’s eyes were wide with surprise. “…Yes Bhabhisa, Bhai…he is not my biological brother. My parents were originally from Bhopal and they were married by community elders to settle some property dispute in their respective families.  They had moved to Alwar when my father got a job with in the police force here. They were never compatible and always fought. My mother Romila Devi was extremely ambitious and wanted money, fame and mainly power. They were blessed with a baby boy within a year of their marriage but instead of cementing the distance they only grew apart. That was my brother…Vikram.” Preeti kept a hand at her chest feeling her heart galloping as Narmada continued.

“…My father was not a good person…I mean he had a super dark streak…A strange sense of displaced patriotism. He wanted to build a …cult …an organisation which fought for the country….clandestinely. He wanted to get the streets rid of anti-social elements. He wasn’t happy to abide by the boundaries set by the law. So he left the police force.  One day bhai came into their lives. He was just a year younger to Vikram but far more intelligent and strong. I…well I was an accident that happened in the one moment of passion my parents shared years later… But my father was disappointed at me being a girl. He wanted boys. He home schooled all of us and never allowed us to socialise. People barely knew us. We kept moving within Alwar and neighbouring districts. Once my parents separated I stayed back in Bhiwadi with my mother. Vikram mostly stayed with dad occasionally visiting us. But bhai was not allowed to leave dad’s home. He would secretly visit me and get me goodies….” Narmada smiled through tears.

Preeti held Narmada’s hand urging her to continue. “… My mother was never bothered much so far as she got her monthly maintenance. My dad had sold all his ancestral property in Bhopal when the demand came and had made good money. So we didn’t have any financial issues for our limited needs but I wanted to meet other girls my age…play with them. But our parents weren’t bothered. Each was busy with their own life goals. Bhai grew up into this strong just warrior. My father wasn’t an easy person to live with but bhai endured it all. He never revolted. I have seen belt marks on his hands and legs but he said they were a part of his training. Unfortunately Vikram didn’t…um…turn out the way it was expected. He was a strong combat soldier no doubt… but he… he was a bastard of the greatest degree. He tried to lay his dirty hands…on…me…when I was ten…” Narmada blinked back tears and Preeti squeezed her hands. “…Bhabhisa… bhai saved me that day and saw to it that Vikram always stayed away from me. He has always since then been looking out for me….”

Preeti wasn’t surprised. That was her Gautam…loyal and caring and…protective. She had experienced it too.

Narmada took in a deep breath. “… Bhai got a chance to go to school for three years and I think that groomed him to take up the future course of action. I don’t have any idea what he did for my dad but I know he has always been discrete and making the right decisions. I trust him on that. I am seventeen years younger to bhai and he has always been there for me like a …parent would…. He and Vikram were close though they were like fire and ice. But they always had each other’s backs. I don’t know what they did in the missions that they called them…but they were kind of happy in their own way, It was all status quo till that day twelve years ago…”

Preeti stiffened. Narmada patted her hand and spoke. “…I know bits and pieces. Bhai got to know of what was happening in that alley and he rushed to that place. But he couldn’t save your brother and driver. He saved you though… But he wasn’t the same after that. He was never a social person but from that day he became a total recluse. He stopped talking to everyone. That was the day Vikram died. Bhai…he …he ki..killed him….”

Preeti was shocked. “Why…?” she asked softly.

Narmada who was openly crying by now looked into her eyes as she said, “ Because Vikram was the same blue eyed monster who tried to violate you that day and even tried to kill you in the hospital…” Preeti started to sob as the past came before her eyes. Narmada gave her a hug. The two of them remained like that for a few moments.

Narmada stood up to stretch her legs. She started to pace. “…Bhai only told me this the next day when he came to meet me and mother. For the last time… That was the maximum he had spoken with me. He was leaving us for good. Fortunately he gave me his phone number and also a mobile by which I could connect with him. Next day the authorities found dad lying on the floor in his house having overdosed with sleeping pills. He died soon after. I didn’t have any feelings about losing Vikram or dad…but I was terrified with the prospects of bhai leaving us. He arranged for me to attend a college and a hostel as well. My mother was indifferent. She inherited all of dad’s money. Bhai too provided for her…still does…. But she has this strange wish to own the Gagorn fort….” Narmada came over to Preeti and sat next to her. She took her hand in hers and continued. “…Bhabhisa …I know you are angry…its…its alright…its understandable… But please don’t hate bhai. He deserves happiness after all the  crap life has thrown him. I had told him to leave the conquest to achieve Gagorn but my mother has some hold over him which he can’t seem to shake off. Bhabhisa…” She looked pleadingly at Preeti. “…You have to…have to help him out of this… Just take him away from here…take him back to Mumbai. He has been the happiest with you…He made me happy by taking me out of my mother’s clutches and helping me elope with Gaurang. Please Bhabhisa… help him out…He is a moron. He will never ask…”

They both chuckled. Preeti even laughed a bit. Of course Narmada was right. Her saviour with the beautiful brown eyes who unleashed passion in tonnes was a moron when it came to the matters of the heart.

Later that evening Narmada left with Gaurang who had come to pick her up and they were to leave for Jaisalmer early next morning. Preeti insisted that they stay with them instead of the hotel but Narmada staunchly refused. She held Preeti’s hand one last time and squeezed it winking at her and bid good bye.

It was 10 PM and Gautam was still not home. He had sent a message with Gaurang that he would be very late. He had told her to go to bed.

Preeti reminisced about all that Narmada told her. It showed Gautam in a new light but not too different than what she already had known about him. She hugged herself as she felt the flutter in her heart…oh God how much she loved him!!

Preeti smiled to herself as she made a decision. She was definitely going to do all it took to win back the love of her life…. And this marriage of theirs was definitely for keeps.

She walked into the kitchen and checked for the items in the fridge. Her smile widened as she went over her culinary plan. Next she knew she was wearing an Apron and listening to another of her favourite songs as she swayed and cooked.

Bahon me chale aa…..

Chapter 28

Preeti stood rooted to the floor. . Her tears flowed freely as the banging of his door vibrated throughout the house. What just happened? Why did he scream at her? She had always known him to be caring and polite irrespective of his mood at the time. She had never seen him yell or throw a fit… But what was this? She had just asked him a simple question…she had the right to know it all. Was this his real persona?

She had been sleeping after a tiring journey from Kota when some kind of a sound, as if someone had called her out…had woken her. But she was so used to having nightmares of the weirdest kinds she didn’t know if she could rely on her senses when awake…

She had gotten off the bed and opening the door had walked down the stairs. The faint sound was getting a bit clearer. Someone was calling her name…in distress. Was it Gautam? She had thought with fear. Was he in some kind of trouble? As she had walked into the drawing room the voices had stopped… Oh God was she hallucinating? She had held her head with her left hand and had hoped she didn’t need a psychiatrist someday… she had started to confuse dreams with reality. She was about to turn and return when Gautam had asked what she was doing there. She had been scared out of her wits. He had thought she couldn’t see him well but her eyes had adjusted to the darkness by then. He was sweating all over… he was only in his boxers and that open coat… she was silenced. But why the sweat… was he working out at this hour? He also seemed in some kind of pain. She didn’t need any light to read his stormy eyes. If only he would share what was troubling him… She had tried coaxing him and then he had yelled at her. Her chest clenched not because he said that, she realised. She was feeling his pain…his agony. How could she help him? She thought about that as she wiped her cheeks and climbed the stairs. She wanted to apologise so that it would calm him further instead of shutting him off. She walked towards his room and heard the gut wrenching sobs… Oh my God… Gautam… his anguish was palpable. She almost knocked at the door. But realised he needed his solitude.

But only till morning Gautam … she had thought. She felt determined. She would speak with him tomorrow… let him yell his lungs out…she would have her answers tomorrow. She would put her life on the line if needed but she would reduce his pain…

She didn’t know how long she had slept. She woke up with the sound of the front door being shut. As she stretched on the bed carefully to avoid hurting her injured hand, she heard a vehicle start and leave. Wait… did he leave the house? She scampered to the window. By the time she struggled to open the latch and peep outside she saw Gautam on the driver’s seat, speaking to Bhim Singh near the gate and pulling up the window. He then drove out. Did he run away…as usual? She was disappointed. All for her tall self-claims of talking to him…

She realised she was feeling much better than before physically. She was tired of lying in bed and also wanted to get off the day old clothes. She smiled as she untied the beautiful butterfly knots at her shoulder and released the hotel robe that he had customised for her. He was so resourceful, she thought. She had removed her sling and luckily today she was able to straighten her hand. The pain was there but bearable. She decided not to take her painkillers. They made her drowsy… She also had to try to write because whatever it was, she wanted to sign those documents …if that meant peace of mind for Gautam. She wanted him back… She had a quick bath taking care not to wet the bandage and changed into fresh pair of clothes.  She walked down to the kitchen and saw a note tucked to the refrigerator. It was written by him she realised seeing the beautiful handwriting. At the same time she worried…remembering the last time he had written such a letter…the day he had probably left for Alwar from Mumbai. She took the letter…

Preeti,

I hope you are feeling better. I have some urgent work and will be gone all day. Will be getting late. Bhim Singh is taking care of the security. Your breakfast is on the counter. Heat it once or ask Bhim Singh to do it. Narmada will be dropping home to give you company and take you to the doctor.  11 AM appointment with Dr. Shekhawat. Don’t be late. Take care and don’t wait up for me.

-GR

Preeti teared up. Gautam was still the same. He cared about her she thought taking the letter close to her chest. She had forgotten all about it but he remembered her appointment. He took care of her more than she did herself. If only he would let her reciprocate… But Narmada? He called her all the way from Jaisalmer…the lady was pregnant for God’s sake and had just travelled for the wedding. Just then the doorbell buzzed and she opened the door to a beaming Narmada.

Narmada walked in and gave her a hug. “Good morning Bhabhisa… how are you today? How’s that hand?”

Preeti smiled. “I am good Narmada but you didn’t have to travel all the way in this condition. Gautam is going to hear it from me…”

Narmada laughed her hearty laughter. “Are..na na Bhabhisa… Gaurang and I are still in Alwar. Actually Gaurang is a lawyer and he handles bhai’s estates as well. Today they had an important meeting. So we had stayed back. Gaurang just dropped me here and he will now join bhai. By the way…we have to be at the doctor’s. Did you have breakfast?”

Preeti smiled and invited Narmada to join her. Gautam had prepared quite a lot and she wondered when he woke up to do all this? Especially after sleeping so late last night… Narmada and she enjoyed the breakfast and she felt light hearing her constant chatter. She was thankful to Gautam to have arranged for Narmada to be here.

She was still smiling when they later landed in Dr. Shekhawat’s clinic. He examined the wound and redressed it. He said she was healing well and didn’t need the sling anymore. He gave her light exercises to keep the hand moving and get the muscles working again.  Later Bhim Singh, who had driven them to the doctor, dropped them at a local restaurant. Narmada and she had a fun time over lunch where they discussed everything from the climate to politics to food. She was amazed at how much Narmada knew. Must be brilliant like her brother she thought.

Narmada and she visited a local museum with Bhim Singh who was keeping a distance and watching over them. The museum was small but depicted the history of Alwar. She was in awe…thinking she had never been here till she was in Bhiwadi. Narmada was a huge fan of history and was engrossed in reading the plaques below. Preeti however was bored by now and rested on a nearby sofa. Suddenly her phone buzzed. She checked an incoming text. It was from a private number.

‘This time the bullet won’t graze…it would be a shot to kill… DO NOT SIGN THE PAPERS…’

She sat upright with a jolt. So, the bullet was for her… but who the hell was this?

She was thinking when the phone buzzed again.  It was another text from the private number.

‘Don’t think of doing anything in the sly. My eyes are on you all the time. BTW… blue colour suits you…’

She almost dropped the phone and stood looking around. She didn’t find anything out of ordinary. She looked down at her blue outfit. She was shivering with fear when Narmada approached her. “What happened Bhabhisa?” concern marring her beautiful features.

Preeti didn’t want to involve Narmada. She shook her head and said… “I..um I was day dreaming… shall we go home?”

Narmada looked at her for a moment and then they left the museum. Even after they reached home later, Preeti couldn’t shake off the fear of having been watched. Who was this person?

Narmada prepared coffee for them while Preeti changed into comfortable clothes and they sat at the dining table.

“Bhabhisa…?”

“Hmmm?”

“How are things between you and bhai..?”

Preeti looked up at her startled. Narmada’s eyes were filled with worry. She continued. “..Um..I am sorry bhabhisa I didn’t mean to intrude… But I worry for bhai.”

Preeti saw that Narmada was genuinely worried for Gautam and a little pang of jealousy hit her as she thought she knew nothing about her husband while his sister here knew him so well.

“Actually Bhabhisa… bhai has been through so much…” she looked away lost in thought. “…I never thought he would ever find happiness…” She turned back to Preeti and placed her palm on hers. “…But Bhabhisa…I am glad he found you.” Narmada’s eyes teared up and she blinked them away.

Preeti was surprised to see Narmada like this. “Narmada, your bhai never speaks out his heart isn’t it? I wish I could know what’s troubling him…”

“Bhabhisa…I don’t know if you know anything about our childhood… If you did then you would know why he is… like this.”

“Narmada…If you don’t mind… can you tell me? I want to know and understand this enigma who is my husband… who is so caring and who has bottled up so much inside him….and the man that I love more than life itself…” Narmada came up to Preeti and hugged her.

“Thank you Bhabhisa… I am so relieved… come lets go to the drawing room. There’s a lot I have to tell you…”

Preeti followed Narmada to the drawing room. She had a mixture of emotions. Happy that she would finally get to know something about Gautam but still unsure if she would actually be able to enter his heart…

Gautam stressed…

Chapter 27

Someone had shot her… his Preeti. Gautam paced his room furiously. He was just off the phone having spoken with the local police. The useless guys had reached dead ends. Who the hell wanted her out of the way? The poor girl didn’t even know why she was there. He had thought of getting done with the signatures at the earliest and hand the registered deed over to Romila Devi fulfilling his end of the bargain. She would then have kept her promise too…

He had been so thrilled to see his scheme had worked. Everything had fallen into place. His Preeti… his beloved was now his wife. He had vowed to love and cherish her. Once the signatures and transfers were done then he would have taken her away from all this chaos and begged her forgiveness. He would have told her everything… his every dark secret. He had hoped she would forgive him. He didn’t trust anyone, but Preeti’s eyes were a mirror to her heart. He knew she loved him in spite of not knowing him… his past. He would have opened up his life in front of her… and if she accepted him then he would have only one more important job to do. He would have taken her along for that. He would need her with him like never before…

But now everything was delayed further. However he was more worried about Preeti. She was so trusting in spite of the fact that he had been very secretive about everything so far. He hadn’t told her anything about the age old Sengar feud and she didn’t even know that she was the owner of a heritage property. She was a millionaire if the local folklore was to be believed. But his little vixen would have questioned him to the sunset and not rested till she got her answers. He still didn’t know why Romila Devi was interested in the fort. The place was practically in ruins and the land around it was also barren. Since the law of the land applied there, no Government was interested in the area and its upkeep. It was like a no man’s land. What would Romila Devi do with the fort? Anyway he wasn’t interested in that. He wanted his life back from her. She had held the strings tightly for the last twelve years. He now felt strangulated. And more than that, his heart was crying for innocent Preeti. He promised himself he would make up to her for all the trouble caused. First he would tell her about the marriage clause and apologise to her for the trouble she had to go through. Second, he had already initiated, he would give her a choice. She would be free to leave for Mumbai and head the company where she was working. Nothing would hold her back anymore. If she would have him… then he would accompany her to Mumbai after finishing his last job … If not then he would be crushed but he would definitely not stop her.

He had spoken to Bhim Singh who had initiated a discrete enquiry into the shooting. He had a gut feeling it had to do something with the incident twelve years ago… but what? He had checked her family for alibis. They worked out fine. There was no news about any hit-man hired too.  Who the hell shot her? They could have shot him instead… He rubbed his face again. He wanted to hold her in his arms to comfort her. He knew she was under tremendous duress…but the truth was he wanted a sense of calm for the raging storm in his heart. He needed her badly… but he had seen her face today morning. Something was different. She was looking at him accusingly… He was too upset when Romila Devi had called that morning. She had been spewing venom over the phone mainly at Preeti. He wasn’t able to rein in his temper. He was stuck…he couldn’t tell the lady anything.

He had never bothered what people thought about him…his business partners, workers… but Preeti’s opinion about him was his reason to live. It had been ever since he had seen adoration for him in her eyes all those years ago on her last day in the hospital. No one had loved him, adored him…accepted him for what he was. But she had. She had unknowingly started to heal him…his soul. He couldn’t bear it if she thought he was the villain…

He decided he would let her go. It was unbearably painful to even think of it but he would do it. She deserved happiness…she deserved a normal life… not a fucked up life partner….She had suffered for twelve long years. It was time she got a chance to move on…

Would he be able to stand her gone? With someone else? He clenched his fists. He had to release the excess energy…

He had hurt Preeti. The only one whom he had ever loved… he had broken her heart, had trampled over it… and today she was suffering because of a shot that was probably meant for him. He deserved to be punished. It was 2 AM. His mentor had said the best time for penitence was between 2AM to 3 AM when the world slept.

He went downstairs and towards the red room.

He closed the door as he entered his secret world. He took the clamps from the drawer and pinched his skin across his torso. He took out the arm binder and hung it to the hook on the ceiling. The other end of the rope went over a pulley and he held the button box attached to it. He bound his hand and legs together in the loops lying on the cot on his stomach. The clamps dug further into his skin making him clench his teeth. He pressed the button which tightened the rope and lifted him up on the bed. The skin on the torso stretched now and the pain doubled. He screamed as the pain radiated up his arms and legs…

After about ten minutes he released the button and landed with a thud on the bed which again pushed the clamps deeper. By now he was erect like a stone. He released the ropes and clamps. He lay on the bed holding his wood. His grip tightened as Preeti’s smiling face came before his closed eyes. His breathing was laboured as he increased the pace of his strokes… Soon his member twitched and a vision of Preeti shattering apart under him caused him to explode his juices all over his hand. He came harder screaming her name repeatedly till his throat went hoarse. He laid like that for a while a strange sense of calm descending over. Later he cleaned himself and replaced the things in their places. He wore his boxers and coat and walked out of the room the locks falling in place. He then emerged out of the entrance.

As he walked towards the stairs he saw a shadow… crouching along the drawing room. He didn’t need light to see who it was

“What are you doing here Preeti?” he asked softly

Preeti straightened suddenly and screamed. “Oh God…Gautam… you scared me…I…I heard someone…” She stared at his torso thorough his unbuttoned coat and continued. “…I.. um…I  came to check here…um…What’s that?” She pointed to his body. She must have seen the marks. God… the woman had great night vision…

Did she hear him scream? Was he that loud?

“There is no one out here Preeti. Go back to sleep…”

“What are you doing here Gautam?” She asked inclining her head slightly.

He wanted nothing more than to kiss away that frown. “Go…go to sleep Preeti… you need the rest.” He said softly.

“Why Gautam? Why is my rest so important for you?” She asked with her good hand on her hips. Even in the dark he saw annoyance in her eyes.

“Preeti…please- go- to –your- room…”

“What if I don’t? What are you going to do then? Spank me now? Slap me? You know what…do what you want. I am not scared of you…never was…I got shot for God’s sake.”

He moved close to her… Some invisible string pulling him towards her for last twelve years… It was stronger today. He was almost touching her. She looked adorable in her makeshift robe that she had still worn. Her hair had escaped from her clutch which she must have hurriedly used. He raised his hand and pushed an unruly strand away and tucked it behind her ear. He saw her eyes shining. It killed him to see her so sad and upset. He wanted to tell her everything… every detail. But this was not the time…

“You are hurt sweetheart… to heal… you need the rest.”

“Is it to heal or is it the hurry for my signatures?” She asked him. He stiffened. Did she know anything?

just drop it…

“Preeti…. Please…” he barely heard his own voice.

“I want answers Gautam… Goddamn it…talk to me”

“Preeti…don’t…” he was losing it again.

“You don’t get it, do you?”

“For the last time… Preeti…just drop it…”

“Why did you marry me Gautam?” she suddenly asked touching his arm.

He jerked her hand away and turned around. He couldn’t face her. What if she refused to sign… then Romila Devi would… NO… he felt the walls closing on him…. He had no other option. He abruptly turned around and yelled. “JUST GET THE FUCK INTO YOUR ROOM. DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND SUCH A SIMPLE STATEMENT? WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BE SO STUBBORN? GO AND REST FOR YOUR OWN GODDAMN SAKE…” He turned and ran up the stairs to his room banging the door shut.

He slid down his back on the door. He crouched down on the cold floor and held his face in his palms. He convulsed as huge sobs rocked his body…he cried… for the first time in last 40 years he actually cried.

He cried for his pathetic inability to work things out, he cried for the normalcy that plagued him for ages and most of all for a chance with the woman whom he loved more than life, the woman whom he almost lost… and he just hurt her … again.
